The Little Things in Growth

Napoleon Hill once said,

"Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle."

You have to start from nothing, from the bottom to truly grow. You have hit to rock bottom. I don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't been molded into a better person without hitting rock bottom. Whether you know it or not, you've had to go through a lot of shit to be where you currently are. Art is creating something out of nothing; creating something beautiful and worthy out of scraps and broken pieces. You are a piece of art. The mosaic within your shattered heart will eventually illuminate such beautiful colors and worthy hues.

Think about the song. The song you love so dearly, but grew to hate it because it's the song that played in the background as you cried at night after being reminded of him/her... or it reminds you of that day that changed you forever. The song you grew to hate because it was the song you were listening to when your heart got shattered in pieces. Growth is when you don't cry at the introduction of the song anymore. Growth is when you can listen to the song and start dancing in front of the mirror in just your t-shirt and underwear. Growth is when you take a second to look at yourself in the mirror and can't help but crack a smile because you're no longer broken. You're no longer crying to the words of the song, but instead you're singing your heart out and dancing like tomorrow isn't promised. That's the thing. Tomorrow is never promised, which is why it's the little things in life that matter the most... or should matter the most.

Growth is when you reminisce about the good old times and acknowledge that things in life happen for a reason; a reason you may not know until months or even years from now. Nothing happens for no reason. Everything happens for a reason. Growth is when other people notice your loud laughs and big smiles before you even get the chance to. It's been a while since your smile radiated such genuine happiness, a contagious happiness at that. You probably hadn't realized the change from faking your happiness to the genuine one that others saw because for so long you've had to keep up an act, an act you no longer know how to play anymore.

That person you miss so much? Have you realized that you no longer spend every second of the day thinking about them and what they're doing and who they're with or the memories you've shared together? No. You probably think about it every once in a blue moon and that's okay. It's okay because you probably think about it at 4am when you're wide awake but you've already finished binge-watching your favorite show so you have nothing better to do. Growth is when the heartbreak doesn't take up most of your time anymore. Growth is also reflecting and reminiscing from time to time because that's what makes us us. That's what being a human being means.

Growth is when you wake up in the morning and realize you kind of love the sounds of the birds chirping because once again, it truly is the little things in life that matter the most.

Growth is when you go from not caring about waking up from your sleep to wondering what's going to happen to your kindergarten diploma when you leave this world in ashes. Remember that horrid moment when you were contemplating whether life was worth all the pain it comes with, whether any of it mattered? All you ever wanted was the hurt to stop. You didn't fear death. In fact, maybe you even wanted it. Fast forward to the next couple of months, or to the next few years, and you're now fearing death. It's funny how things go. It all takes time. It all takes patience.

What does growth mean to you?
